SPOTLIGHT ON EXEMPLARY INITIATIVES AND INDIVIDUALS

PEER GROUP LEADERS OFFER MUTUAL INSPIRATION AND SUPPORT

The formation of Peer Group Leaders (PGLs) under the NECTAR project has equipped school
leaders to gain a holistic grasp of how to execute their roles in school improvement. In the
short account below, we spotlight two educators who demonstrate continuous learning and
improvement as core values in their leadership roles.
With over twenty years of experience each, Mr Keneingu Rutsa, the Head Teacher at GMS L Khel,
Kohima and Mr Kedanye Thong, the Vice Principal of TM GHSS, Kohima recently reunited to
exchange best practices and tackle some of the challenges they face in their respective schools.
One notable practice from Mr Keneingu’s school involves addressing the issue of occasional
teacher absenteeism. Since it is not possible to visit every classroom during each period, Mr
Keneingu along with other teachers came up with the “check book” system. Under this system,
class captains maintain a log where teachers record the subject and topic covered during each
class. At the end of the day, the log is submitted to Mr Keneingu.

This system has proven effective in ensuring accountability and tracking classroom activities. The
discussion between the two school leaders inspired Mr Kedanye Thong, the Vice Principal of TM
GHSS to adopt a similar approach at his school.

Both leaders found that this peer support system not only addressed specific concerns but
also highlighted the value of collaboration between school heads. Their mutual respect and
eagerness to learn from one another underscore the benefits of shared experiences and insights
in overcoming common challenges.
