NAGALAND BECOMES THE SECOND STATE IN THE COUNTRY TO INTRODUCE TEACH TOOL
Teach Tool, the World Bank’s standardised classroom observation tool, serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for governments to assess teaching practices and education quality in classrooms. The findings will aid in enhancing future Teacher Professional Development (TPD) practices.
Implemented under the NECTAR Project in collaboration with Leadership for Equity (LFE), Teach Tool has carried out the following interventions so far:
Teach Tool Level-1 Training for Master Trainers: 37 Trainers of Teachers (ToTs) were certified as Teach Master Trainers in Level-1 Training held from 10 to 19 September, 2023, at Mount Tabor Retreat Centre, Kohima. Additionally, 3 members of the Nagaland Core Team (NCT) and 3 members of NECTAR Project Management Unit (PMU) and Project Management Consultant (PMC) qualified as Teach Observers.
Teach Tool Level-2 Training for Observers: During Level-2 training, 35 ToTs certified as Master Trainers, in turn, trained 337 School Heads from 10 to 19 October, 2023, at various training stations across Nagaland. A total of 270 School Heads/School Head representatives and 9 ToTs successfully became Teach Tool observers.

Baseline Observations: 268 certified observers conducted 2578 unique teacher observations using the Teach Nagaland App across the state from 26 October to 10 November, 2023. Additionally, 46 Master Trainers (ToTs) and 3 LFE members engaged in double coding 453 teacher observations. After the training, an internal evaluation of the Teach Tool implementation was conducted by the PMC/PMU team. This exercise is expected to inform state-wide replication of the Teach Tool in Nagaland and document learnings towards the development of guidelines and modules for the state’s perusal.
In the ensuing phase, the data collected through baseline observations will be consolidated on a reporting dashboard across various levels. This process will furnish a holistic comprehension of prevailing classroom practices, identifying specific requirements for teacher training at the school, block, district, and state levels.
The training provided participants with a new way of looking at teaching and learning transactions and helped uncover insights that were previously overlooked. For example, it emphasised the importance of recognising and addressing biases, using language carefully and responsibly, and fostering inclusive communication.
